Greenwich closes all shellfish beds for 21 days after sewage discharge
Shellfish Commission · Meeting of May 12, 2026
CT GREENWICH — Greenwich closes all shellfish beds for 21 days following a raw sewage discharge in the Byram area, as the Shellfish Commission grapples with managing fishing grounds affected by contamination. Alissa Dragan of DABA briefed commissioners that recreational beds are already closed for the season and that grounds east of Greenwich Point may be reconsidered after additional testing. Findings from a dye study have prompted Dragan to propose a permanent prohibited zone from the Byram River to the Mianus River, pending a summer sanitary survey, requiring the Commission to strategize relocation of shellstock from potentially reclassified areas.
