Parks Board recommends 250th anniversary Liberty Tree with future-use concerns

Board of Parks & Recreation · Meeting of July 29, 2026

CT GREENWICH — Greenwich Parks Board recommends Liberty Tree with conditions. The Board of Parks and Recreation voted to recommend to the Board of Selectmen a proposal to plant a commemorative 250th anniversary tree and plaque at 290 Greenwich Avenue, on the Board of Education building grounds. The board's recommendation included formal notation of concerns about the uncertain future use of the Havemeyer property, citing a prior RTM decision rejecting placement of a statue at the same location for similar reasons.

Board members emphasized the need to select a location permanent enough to minimize the possibility of future relocation.
